UAH President Robert Altenkirch met with The Huntsville Times editorial board Tuesday and outlined the budget expectations for the hockey program to stay Division I:

Under the new plan, UAH will provide $650,000 to the projected $1.5 million annual budget cited by the school to have a competitive NCAA Division I hockey program. That leaves $850,000 – or 57 percent – to come from other sources.

Those other sources, Altenkirch said, will come “from a combination of ticket sales, corporate sponsorships, advertising, fundraising, you name it.”

The $650,000 would represent a decrease from recent years, where about $800,000 out of a $900,000 budget would come from direct university support. This means we as a fanbase have a greater responsibility to help this program survive and thrive.

We can do this. You can do your part by donating to the 2012 Hockey Campaign.

People have been asking how to help these days. If you haven’t heard, the money from outside donors appears to be there in terms of covering the operating budget of the hockey program. As such, we have hearts and minds to convince these days. You can contact members of the University of Alabama System Board of Trustees, but I think that we should focus our efforts on two people: Alabama Governor Dr. Robert Bentley and new UAH President Robert Altenkirch.

You may call Dr. Bentley at (334) 242-7100, and you can email through his contact form. If you’re going to be a little cranky, we’d rather that Dr. Bentley hear that than Dr. Altenkirch.

You can email Dr. Altenkirch, but please keep it friendly, courteous, and positive. Altenkirch will be the person who makes this decision, and vitriol is NOT going to help us here. I’ve already emailed him once, and I’m sure that I will again.

Obviously, both of these contact modes work best when coming from Alabamians or UAH faculty/staff/students, but we’ll take help from anyone and everyone. Just remember that we’re essentially asking for a favor.

Sunday afternoon, Eric Burton pinged me on Twitter about local media coverage. He’s known around the Internets as “ndgoon” or “goon48″, and he blogs about college hockey at Goon’s World. Goon has often written about the UAH situation from a WCHA perspective, terming the CCHA’s rejection of UAH’s 2009 application as “bs” right after it happened, calling the rejection bogus again this summer and then increasing his ire a bit when the CCHA admitted that they would pursue Penn State. Of course, WCHA Commissioner Bruce McLeod has publicly stated that Big Ten commissioner Jim Delany has told him that the league will sponsor a six-team league under the Big Ten banner, and it seems unlikely that the Nittany Lions will ever have a CCHA patch on their sweaters.

In light of all this, it’s safe to say that Goon has all our backs. Back to today:

Mmmm … yeah. If this is acceptable to you, I would advise you to sit on your hands. Nothing to see here. But if it irks you that an overtime upset of the #15 team in the country on their ice, with our goalie setting a (D-I era) team record for saves with 58, we’d urge you to contact The Huntsville Times about this. John Turner is the sports editor at the Times.

You might want to add that there was no coverage of the Merrimack series in Nashville, either. You might want to be thorough in your thrashing.

<ins datetime="2011-01-31T04:55:56+00:00">Addendum</ins>: Please note that The Huntsville Times has exactly zero problem with covering the fool out of the Huntsville Havoc:

Big, big thanks go to Ferris for scheduling a home-and-home with the Chargers, and RPI for inviting us to their holiday tournament and then coming down a couple weeks later. Congratulate Bemidji and UNO on making the move to the WCHA this year. Thank Colorado College for continuing to bring us to Colorado Springs. Tell the BG guys that we’re happy that they’ve kept their program alive. Thank Ohio State for agreeing to come to Huntsville next year. Thank Michigan State for sending us first Coach Cole and now Coach Luongo. That should do it as far as thanks go.

Get to emailing!

Dear Charger Faithful,

We sent out a save the date memo earlier for our golf outing on June 12, 2010. We have attached the sign up info and look forward to seeing you there. It looks to be a great outing and many alumni from out of town have let us know they will be attending and we always have a great response form our local alumni.

Please call or email if you have any questions.

Thank you and see you at Cherokee Ridge.

Coach Cole

Below is the signup form. I don’t golf, and I don’t know about Will, but maybe we’ll show up to drink beer and heckle those who do.

Howdy, everyone. I think we’re all aware that UAH has made the 2010 Midwest Regional. Wondering where to catch it?

Television: ESPNU will carry the game at 3:00 p.m. Huntsville time. Buffalo Wild Wings on University Drive (Madison Sq. Mall) has indicated to us that they receive ESPNU and would be willing to host UAH fans who wanted to congregate to get the game. I was asked to look into this by UAH students, who don’t get ESPNU on campus.

Radio: WTKI (92.9FM, 1450AM) will carry the broadcast. I’m not sure exactly when we’ll be on the air, but I’d figure no earlier than 2:30 p.m. Huntsville time. When I say “we”, I mean Steve Moulton (play-by-play) and yours truly (color commentary).

On the Web: We honestly don’t know just yet. We are looking into options for rebroadcast on the Internet, and we’ll update you when we have more information. <ins datetime="2010-03-23T18:07:19+00:00">Update, 1:07 p.m.</ins> No Internet broadcast. Too expensive to get the rights.

If you’d like to sponsor the radio broadcast, here are the details:

$75 a game gets you at least five 30-second spots. If you have a spot already produced, we’ll use that; if not, please work with us and we’ll get copy from you for either Steve or I to produce prior to the game. We’ll also do an unspecified amount of in-game reads to thank our corporate sponsors, and if we go into overtime, additional ads are free as our thanks.

$50 a game gets you an individual sponsorship. We’ll read your name during the game as a thanks from us to you for your support of UAH Hockey Radio. This is designed for boosters, alumni, team parents, etc.

If neither of these options works for you, we’ll take PayPal in smaller increments.

As it stands, I’m putting this together in the hopes that we’ll get the costs covered, so financial assistance is greatly desired. We’ve got two corporate sponsors already, and we’re hoping to have at least five.

Jerseys are no longer available. Thank you for your interest.

Several folks, via email, text, Twitter, Facebook, and here on Save UAH Hockey, have asked, “How do I get one of those blue road jerseys that UAH wears?” Your chance to get one of the camo thirds is now gone, but I’ve talked to Coach Cole about doing a run of the blues.

So, if you will, please either comment here, on Facebook, via Twitter, or in an email to g@saveuahhockey.com, let us know: do you want one of the blue road jerseys? We’ll use the interest to gauge the jersey buy and price them accordingly.

All proceeds would, as you’d guess, to go UAH Hockey. Right now, we’d guess on a price point of around $200, but that may come down. Why so expensive? The jerseys themselves—which aren’t replicas, but would be just like a game-worn jersey—run over $100.

Jerseys are no longer available. Thank you for your interest.
